Ladies and gentlemen, the fancy red carpet rolled out, cameras were flashing, and the stars of Hollywood were here for the most glamorous event – The Red Carpet!
As the celebrities gathered to celebrate the best of the year, all eyes were fixed on their red carpet-outfits. Some celebrities impressed us with their great style, while others left us wondering about their choices.
So, without waiting any longer, let’s talk about the worst red-carpet outfits and the fashion fails.
1. Bjork
Bjork, a famous artist known for her music and style, doesn’t seem to look very good in her red carpet outfit when she poses for pictures.
Perhaps it was the inspiration behind this appearance, but the last time we encountered this outfit was when watching the film “White Chicks.” Nevertheless, Bjork confidently displayed this gown at the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.
Marjan Pejoski, a designer from Macedonia, created this remarkable dress. He wanted the dress to resemble a swan, and he was quite pleased when Bjork added a quirky touch by pretending to lay an egg on the red carpet. Whether you find it iconic or unusual, this is a look that will always be remembered.
2. Z Lala
When you see this outfit, you can’t help but be captivated! Whether it’s the detailed hoop skirt or her enchanting hair accessory, Z LaLa seems like she’s about to cast a spell on you.
Instead of the usual red carpet glam, she opted for a modern take on Maleficent’s style at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, which definitely caught everyone’s attention, even if it wasn’t what we expected from her.
Z LaLa’s daring dress raises some concerns. Imagine this: how does she manage a trip to the bathroom while wearing it?
Were the doorways even wide enough to fit her wide skirt? On the bright side, if someone accidentally spills a drink on her, it would probably just make her a little wet instead of ruining her dress.
3. Lizzy Gardiner
This red carpet-outfit was clearly funded with an American Express card. It’s a bit hard to believe her smile was genuine while wearing a gold card-inspired outfit.
However, Lizzy Gardiner designed this masterpiece herself, so she knew what she was getting into.
They put together this special outfit using 254 old American Express gold cards. It seems like at the 67th Academy Awards in 1995, people really wanted to show off their wealth, and they took this idea very seriously. However, we consider it as one of the worst outfits ever.
4. Lil Kim
Lil Kim looked great in her outfit, all fancy with those wavy edges, but it seemed like something might pop out.
We liked her purple stuff and shiny bits, but we were wondering how she will keep that seashell in place. Misa Hylton, the person who designed this famous outfit, said that she used regular eyelash glue to stick it on.
5. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
While we all appreciate cute red carpet outfits, what Britney and Justin wore in this case doesn’t quite fit the bill.
Though jean jackets and ripped jeans are popular, these two took their love for denim to an extreme. They dressed in entirely different colored denim which did not look good.
The rumor has it that right after their red carpet-appearance at the 2001 American Music Awards, this couple headed straight to a rodeo. Of course, that’s not the case, but their outfits are certainly fitting for the occasion.
It’s unclear whether they genuinely enjoyed wearing these clothes or if it was just their own idea. Personally, if my partner made me wear such an outfit, it might lead to a serious discussion.
6. Margaret Cho
Margaret Cho’s outfit is an attention-grabber but this dress might be on the list of worst Oscar dresses for some.
If you were to remove one of those peacock feathers, it feels like a vital part of Margaret Cho’s unique style would vanish with it.
Animal print is always a stylish choice, but maybe a bit more of it would have helped her stay warm in this dress. Nonetheless, she manages to make a bold statement even without the complete set of colorful feathers.
7. Avril Lavigne
At the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival, Avril Lavigne made quite a bold fashion statement. Some might find it complex, but she went for a daring and punk-inspired look, which is a signature Avril style.
By covering half of her face with her hair and emphasizing the bright red eyeshadow on one eye, she displayed a tough and edgy vibe.
Even though it was the red carpet outfit, Avril was determined to stay comfortable, and this was evident in her choice of a basic band tee and sturdy boots.
8. Nicki Minaj
After seeing the red carpet outfit of Nicki Minaj, we were left wondering “What?” and “Why?” Nicki made quite a bold fashion statement at the 2012 Grammy Awards by donning a full veil and gown on the red carpet.
It’s quite distinct from the style of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and it’s left us utterly perplexed. With Nicki’s striking figure, one might expect her to showcase all the enhanced features, but instead, she chose to be completely covered up.
This is a style choice we would have more likely anticipated from Lady Gaga, known as “our mother monster.”
9. Kylie Jenner
The Kardashian and Jenner families are known for their fashion sense. Kylie Jenner, in particular, has a knack for making even basic sweatshirts and pants look incredibly stylish.
However, this billionaire celebrity surprised everyone by wearing an outfit to the 2019 Grammy Awards that we would typically associate with the Met Gala, not the Grammys.
10. Nicole Richie
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, they did. From the frayed mini skirt to the train conductor hat, this was the trend for many girls in the early 2000s.
However, considering Nicole Richie’s status, it’s surprising she didn’t opt for a more refined red carpet look and saved this style for everyday streetwear.
We’d rather not witness the combination of a denim mini skirt with knee-high boots again. This style belongs in the Limited Too store or at a middle school dance.
I believe that even Nicole, if she were to see this photo now, would likely share the same sentiment.
11. Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart is fully embracing her vampire character. Her face looks emotionless, and she’s wearing red-orange eyeshadow that might make you want to look away before noticing her unusual silver outfit.
It’s a bit awkward to call it an “abomination,” especially since Stewart is wearing Chanel Couture. Honestly, the outfit looks like something you could find at a local thrift store.
At the Cannes premiere of Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” in 2018, this picture was taken just before Kristen did something quite shocking. Despite the event’s “no flats” policy, Kristen chose to disregard it by removing her high heels in order to feel more comfortable.
12. Cher
When Cher arrived at the 1998 Oscars, she made a big impression with her red carpet outfit. Her gown was so see-through that it seemed like she was almost nude, with no slip in side.
Despite the oddness of this outfit, only Cher could wear it and make it work. Her diva status calls for a unique wardrobe, and this dress certainly suits her style.
However, it’s important to note that this is a one-of-a-kind look that shouldn’t be repeated or considered a vintage fashion choice.
13. Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner made a bold statement by wearing denim shorts on the red carpet, challenging the conventional norms.
The Cannes red carpet is famous for its strict dress code, but Kendall confidently defied it at the Fashion For Relief Gala in 2017. Although it wasn’t the official Cannes red carpet, it was still a daring move, and to be honest, not one we endorse.
Kendall is wearing a stylish crop top with a train designed by Alexandre Vauthier, and she’s chosen Jimmy Choo black heels to go with it.
However, the whole grand look is seriously undermined by her high-waisted denim shorts.
Unless we’re reminiscing about the 1990s or early 2000s, it’s probably best for Kendall to keep her jean shorts for her summer yacht parties. In the business world, we need to maintain a certain level of professionalism.
14. Katy Perry
Katy Perry’s unique style was on full display with her bubble-inspired gown at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
Known for her love of fashion, it’s not shocking that Katy embraced this loofah-like look for the red carpet-event. While this Balmain Couture dress may be seen as high fashion, it actually resembles something we might have worn to our childhood tea parties.
15. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian wore a dress at the 2019 Met Gala that was extremely transparent. The outfit, which included a corset-style top and a cinched waist, was designed by Thierry Mugler, who had specially created this masterpiece for Kim.
16. Gwen Stefani
The fashion sense we see today was quite different in the 1990s, as demonstrated by Gwen Stefani at the 1998 VMAs.
We understand she’s from California and used to a casual beach style. But her outfit with a fuzzy bikini top, layered skirt, and blue mini buns is a bit unconventional, and it’s hard to put into words what we think of it.
17. Tilda Swinton
Tilda Swinton is known for having a unique style, especially when it comes to her fashion, which we really like. However, at the 2008 ceremony, she wore something that didn’t quite match our expectations. It was a lumpy velvet dress that looked a bit odd compared to her usual stylish choices.
18. Lena Dunham
Lena Dunham is known for her unconventional public image, which is evident in her TV show “Girls” and her public appearances.
Her choice of a large, pink tutu-like outfit at the 2014 Emmys, designed by Giambattista Valli Couture, is in line with her unique style.
In addition to the many ruffles, she cleverly incorporated an element of comfort by wearing a top that resembled pajamas with a frilly skirt. However, the comfort of the top doesn’t quite match the lively style of the skirt, creating an overall mismatched look.
In our view, this outfit doesn’t quite come together as a cohesive whole, and it might be best to replace both the top and the skirt.
19. Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie’s appearance at the 72nd Academy Awards marked a different style phase as she resembled a dark and dramatic princess. This, combined with the unusual kiss she shared with her brother, ranks as one of the red carpet fails we’d never forget.
20. Kim Basinger
Kim Basinger probably thought she looked cool when she walked on stage at the 62nd Academy Awards wearing her red carpet outfit. She even said she designed this dress, a Jekyll-and-Hyde-like wedding dress, herself.
21. Ashley Tisdale
While “High School Musical” was a Disney Channel success, it seems that the costume department should have emphasized that the outfits should remain on set.
Ashley Tisdale, who portrayed Sharpay Evans, appeared to have taken her character’s fashion sense a bit too seriously, both on and off the camera. Sharpay adored the color pink and had a penchant for extreme fashion, and it appears that Ashley mirrored her character’s style not only in the show but also on the red carpet.
Conclusion
On the red carpet, we’ve seen some stunning outfits and, well, some not-so-great ones too. These red carpet fails remind us that even famous stars can make fashion mistakes. It’s all part of the ever-changing world of red carpet style.
